Helping Kids Learn About Preparedness: A Kid Reviews Jake & Miller's Big Adventure

Sometimes, children have a hard time understanding the meaning of preparedness, or get scared at the thought of venturing out into the great unknown and the dangers they perceive there. Having a book that helps reinforce what we, as parents, are teaching them is a great asset. Jake & Miller’s Big Adventure by Bernie Carr (Apartment Prepper) is just such a book! I was excited when Bernie asked me to review it.

Told in the voice of a child, Jake & Miller’s Big Adventure tackles all of the issues of venturing outdoors and gives kids the knowledge on what the basics are for being prepared for those outdoor adventures. Great for girls and boys going to camp for the first time, or camping for the first time, or even for those wary of going out into the woods for a hike, Jake gives Miller gentle encouragement and knowledge about to handle those situations. This book is more than just about any ‘prepper’ tag given it by the subtitle. This is a great outdoor skills book for kids from 4-9, teaching them about the importance of preparing yourself for outdoor adventures and making sure you have all the right equipment and knowledge for ANY adventure. These are great life skills to learn for any child!

But don’t take my word for it! My youngest, who is ten, read the book and wants to share a few of his thoughts with you in this interview we did:

Tell me what you thought about the book.

It was good. I liked it. I think it was for younger kids, but I liked it.

What was one thing that you learned from the book.

You have to make sure you bring the right equipment and skills for the adventure you are going on. Make sure you have good tools to help.

What is something that Jake could have used but didn’t have? Why would he need it?

A whistle. Just in case he got lost, he could whistle for help. Oh, and a signaling mirror, too!

What was your favorite thing about the book?

I really liked the illustrations. I like how the author covered different things that you might do and how to prepare for the adventure. I liked the twist!

Did reading the book help make you feel more empowered to prepare yourself for an adventure?

Yes. (wait, what does empowered mean?… oh, then yes!)

So you’re ready to go camp-out in the backyard by yourself now?

Well… not by myself, but my brother can come with me! Or maybe if I had a dog …..

Would you recommend this book to other kids?

Yes. I think it would be a good book for kids who might not have any outdoor skills at all.

Jake & Miller’s Big Adventure is available through Amazon in hardcover and Kindle formats. You don’t have to have a Kindle to read it, though! Here’s how.

Don’t have a Kindle?

That’s okay – with Amazon’s app, you can still read it on the cloud, on your e-device, through a .pdf, or on your computer.
