Preparedness Quick Tip: Eat All the Ice Cream First!

October 7, 2016 By Mike Lucero Leave a Comment

About to lose power due to a storm? Have an ice cream party! Eat up all those highly perishable foods now!

A big storm is coming? We’re probably going to lose power? Let’s have an ice cream party!

There you have it. The local news has announced that another hurricane is heading towards your house, and you know it’s going to knock out power for a few days.

Or maybe you’ve lost power after an emergency, and you’ve covered your chest freezer with blankets, you’ve stocked your fridge freezer with ice or you’ve put everything into coolers full of ice, don’t waste space to keep your good food frozen, do this one trick that will make everyone think they’re having a party!

Eat the Ice Cream First!

Mom always said you can’t have dessert first, but in this instance, this MOM is giving you permission.

Eat all of your highly perishable foods first, and save the shelf stable food storage for the aftermath. This way you don’t have food spoiling in the fridge or freezer that you could be eating now. Things in your deep freeze will last longer than those in your fridge freezer, and certain foods will just go bad faster, so eat those first. Make it a party to help alleviate the tension and fear. Don’t let it go to waste.

Tip: Fill your top loading washing machine with ice and extend the power of your coolers that much more to keep refrigerated foods longer during a power outage.
