Mushrooms are a rich source of umami so if you like that flavor then mushrooms are the way to get it. But if you are like a lot of folks, you may love the flavor of mushroom – but not love the texture.
That is why we have an option for you, and it is called mushroom powder. In this article I will share how you can make it – and some ideas for how to use it. In no time you will be enjoying that salty umami flavor without the icky texture that mushrooms tend to bring.
How to make mushroom powder
Mushroom powder requires dehydrated mushrooms as the base. You can either try to buy them in a local specialty shop or dehydrate the mushrooms yourself like I do.
Once you have your dehydrated mushrooms below are the steps for making the mushroom powder.
- Fill your blender or food processor with dehydrated mushrooms.
- Process the dehydrated mushrooms on blend until you have come up with a fine powder.
- Pour the powder through a fine mesh strainer and catch the powder in a storage container below.
- Reprocess any bits that may have not ground down in the first batch and repeat step #3.
- Store the powder in an airtight container and keep in a low light area.
I usually make one or two pints of mushrooms at a time, but I do tend to use them in a lot of dishes I make. How much you make will depend on how much your family enjoys that mushroom flavor.
Note: Use caution when opening your blender top. The mushroom powder will be very fine and if you open the top too quick or before the blending is complete you may wind up with a face full of powder.

Ways to use mushroom powder
There are many uses for mushroom powder and it is a great way to add a bit of healthy goodness to your diet. It brings a bit of additional flavor and of course nutrients.
Below are some ways we use it in our home.
- Add a tablespoon to eggs and omelets
- Add a scoop to salads
- Mix into your favorite meatloaf or turkey burger
- Add a scoop to your homemade pasta sauce
- Include in soups and stews
I recommend adding mushroom powder to any dish later in the cooking process. I find the flavor is better that way then letting it simmer for hours.
Any types of mushrooms can be used to make powder. You can use everyday mushrooms or if you are a mushroom snob, feel free to pay the higher price for those luxury options.
How to store mushroom powder
Fresh mushroom powder should be stored in airtight glass jars. I put them in plastic baggies with the date I made them and then put them in an air tight container for extra longevity.
I actually put together a video on how I store mine!
